Ammianus Marcellinus. Res gestae. PA 6203 A2. Ed: Clark, Galletier, Rolfe. «Ubi Victorem apud Sirmium visum, scriptorem historicum, exindeque venire praeceptum, Pannoniae secundae consularem praefecit, et honoravit aenea statua, virum sobrietatis graia aemulandum, multo post urbi praefectum.» xxi.10.6.

Augustine of Hippo. Correspondence with Jerome very revealing of differences between a highly educated person (Jerome) and a drop-out like Augustine. The age difference is also evident: a whole generation between the two men which confirms the date of birth ascribed by Prosper of Aquitaine. «jeune, ne provoquez pas un vieillard dans le champ des Ecritures» (Ep 68); «mon très cher ami, mon fils par l'âge» (Ep 72). 1:15. «seu libeat fictas ludorum evolvere lites». These are mock trials, they are not the simple games of the magister ludorum, but the exercises of young adults. Derides Victorius subdoctor sive proscholus as a man who pores over abstruse tomes, which no one else reads; pontifical codices, priestly pedigrees, ancient laws, early mythology, etc., all interest him more than the literary delights of Cicero and Virgil (Comm. 22). «Au cours de sa longue histoire, l'Université impériale a été réorganisée plusieurs fois, sans doute après un certain nombre d'éclipses. Tous les témoignages que nos possédons sur ces réformes nous montre qu'elle n'a jamais fait une place quelconque à la théologie dans son enseignement. Le plan d'études n'a pour ainsi dire jamais varié et, comme l'a montré Schissel, il dérivait des programmes d'enseignement usités dans les Instituts néoplatoniciens de la fin de l'Antiquité.» (36f) See Schissel, Ignatius Diaconus, Van den Ven, Anna Comnena.

Rychlewska, L., editor. Turpilii comici fragmenta. Leipzig, 1971. See pages xlv for a list of authors excerpted. Jerome opens Letter 8 with a quote from Turpilius «tractans de vicissitudine litterarum sola, inquit, res est, quae homines absentes praesentes facit.» Turpilius was certainly not a widely known author: apart from the odd quote by Cicero, the fragments of his opus are found in scholars and lexicographers: Nonius (the most important) Marcellus, Diomedes, Isidore and Priscian. In Letter 29,1 to Marcella, makes another allusion to this passage, which is missed by Hagendahl, who only quotes Letter 8.

Incunabula, A-C

This working bibliography deals with the place of incunabula in the history of text transmission. In print form, it runs close to two hundred pages. The texts studied are geographers, ethnographs, and other authors who have information on the history of the Northern neighbours of the Greeks and the Romans. The works of reference, and other items on methodology can be used for any ancient author.
