Derides Victorius subdoctor sive proscholus as a man who pores over abstruse tomes, which no one else reads; pontifical codices, priestly pedigrees, ancient laws, early mythology, etc., all interest him more than the literary delights of Cicero and Virgil (Comm. 22). Jerome opens Letter 8 with a quote from Turpilius «tractans de vicissitudine litterarum sola, inquit, res est, quae homines absentes praesentes facit.» Turpilius was certainly not a widely known author: apart from the odd quote by Cicero, the fragments of his opus are found in scholars and lexicographers: Nonius (the most important) Marcellus, Diomedes, Isidore and Priscian. In Letter 29,1 to Marcella, makes another allusion to this passage, which is missed by Hagendahl, who only quotes Letter 8.
